Breaking Barriers: A Deaf Audiologist's Journey
Dr. Anderson was born with severe-to-profound hearing loss and wore hearing aids into adulthood. After the birth of her second child, her hearing dropped again, and she made the decision to move forward with bilateral cochlear implants. She has lived every part of the path she now walks patients through — the testing, fittings, and adjustments. She found her calling as a teenager, talking openly about what hearing loss feels like: the hard parts, the awkward parts, the funny parts and the freedom that comes with owning it. Two decades later, that is still the heart of how she practices. Originally from Northern Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C., Dr. Anderson is proficient in American Sign Language and stays closely connected to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. As a military spouse, she saw firsthand how often service members live with noise-related hearing loss and tinnitus, and she spent years counseling veterans and active-duty patients through it. How she practices: No two people want the same thing from their hearing. Dr. Anderson starts with your goals — the conversations you are missing, the rooms you avoid, the voices you want back — and builds the plan around those. Technology matters, but it is the means, not the point. She shares a special connection with parents of infants and children with newly diagnosed hearing loss. While embracing technology, she acknowledges the uniqueness of each patient's hearing goals and preferences. Outside the clinic, she revels in travel and the outdoors. Whether skiing down the slopes, biking on trails or paddle boarding the rivers, she is often accompanied by her husband, son, daughter and a very committed Australian Shepherd named Rosie.
